Transport
The Government's 10 Year Transport Plan aims to bring about a sustainable integrated transport system. Improvements in public transport and increased levels of cycling and walking are essential components of the Plan. Local Authorities are charged with implementing measures that will deliver the improvements the Government and public desire.
We think that providing safe, high quality facilities for cyclists and pedestrians is vital. These modes have a crucial role to play in providing alternatives to short commuting and utility trips, too often made by car. Cities where bikes and those on foot are prioritised, be it York or Amsterdam, are better places to live. Those who cycle and walk more are healthier and cities where such modes are prevalent are healthier and safer too. Socially excluded children in particular benefit most from promoting alternatives to the car, as those members of society least likely to be in vehicles are the most likely to be knocked down by one.
Cycling and walking for leisure continues to grow in popularity, bringing tourist spending to B and B's, cafes, attractions and pubs. The National Cycle Network and the National Byway offer new opportunities for nationwide cycle tourism. Britain's extensive network of footpaths and bridleways are a huge resource for walkers and riders too.
We also happen to believe that today's leisure cyclists and walkers are tomorrow's cycle and pedestrian commuters. Promoting cycling, walking and public transport use is as cross-cutting as it gets.
We have a wide range of experience in the sustainable transport field, a few examples include:
- Developing Local Authority community transport strategies and action plans
- Drawing up Local Authority cycling strategies
- Research into the links between leisure and utility cyclists
- Research into pedestrian safety and liveability for socially excluded
- Designing leisure and commuting cycle and walking routes
- Surveying of routes and facilities for cyclists
- Organising guided and DIY cycle rides and walks
- Running a cycle tour company on the Somerset Levels
- Providing cycle training
- Facilitating a cycle challenge project
